Sunday evening former starting quarterback, Kevin Olsen, was arrested with multiple charges including three counts of second degree forcible rape, sexual assault, communicating threats and second-degree sex offense (forcible fondling). The alleged incident occurred at 3:30 a.m. Sunday morning between Olsen and his girlfriend in his apartment.
According to medical reports, the 23-year-old victim had vaginal injuries and bruising around an eye.
Olsen appeared in court around 10 a.m. Monday morning where a bond of $103,000 was set. Olsen is expected to be freed on bond later today and return to his parent’s residence.
He faces up to 10 years in prison for each rape charge, if convicted.
During the hearing, Assistant District Attorney Kristen Northrup laid out the victim’s side of the case.
According to Northrup, Olsen and the victim went out for drinks Saturday night. The two somehow became separated, and Olsen sent his girlfriend a message that threatened to kill her.
After finding each other again, the two took an Uber back to Olsen’s apartment, arriving early Sunday morning. Once back at his place, Olsen, still agitated, took a phone charger, wrapped it around his neck and threatened to kill himself.
Northrup said the victim was able to calm him down, but things quickly escalated again. This time, Olsen’s girlfriend was struck with a pillow and then punched in the face. Following that, Olsen assaulted her three times while, Northrup said, the victim was crying.
The woman was able to leave Olsen’s apartment and call her friend after he fell asleep. Police met the victim at Carolinas HealthCare System University.
George Laughrun, the attorney representing Olsen, said that Olsen “denies 99 percent of what was read in court.”
A statement from the University released Sunday night announced Olsen’s suspension from the football team and said the university “is reviewing the case consistent with its disciplinary procedures.”
Olsen was the starting quarterback for the 49ers in the first five games of the 2016 season before being replaced before Florida Atlantic.
Head coach Brad Lambert said in a statement, “We are aware of the situation with Kevin. In light of his arrest, we can let you know that Kevin has been suspended from all athletic activities. We aren’t able to comment further due to the current investigation.”
